The Thirunelly seed festival is an annual farming/rural fair that has been organised jointly by the Thirunelly Grama Panchayath along with various social organisations that work in the field of conservation of agricultural biodiversity as well as farmer welfare. It is being organised at Kattikulam, the administrative headquarters of Thirunelly Panchayath on 17,18 and 19th of May 2019.
The 3 previous Thirunelly Seed Festivals were celebrations of seed diversity, with a special focus on traditional paddy seeds as well as local food and culture.
In the 4th edition of the festival this year the organising committee is planning to have pavilions for all major crops of Wayanad district along with a pavilion for forest produce like forest fruits, uncultivated leafy vegetables, tree saplings of species common in the Western Ghats and Bamboo. For the first time we are also having a pavilion of desi breeds of cattle and poultry. We are also having a pavilion dedicated to environment which will be showcasing the challenges posed by climate change as seen with the cycles of drought and excess rain in Wayanad.
Save Our Rice campaign will be releasing its comprehensive publication on Native Paddy Varieties of Kerala at the event.
The festival is being organised by Brahmagiri Development Society, Thanal, Thirunelly Agri Producer Company (TAPCo), Pazhassiraja Smaraka Granthalayam, Fair Trade Alliance-Kerala, Kudumbasree Mission-Wyanad, Kerala Mahila Samakhya Society and Bharath Beej Swaraj Mission with the support of the Thirunelly Grama Panchayath.
